May 2010 Big Brew Recap

by Jeff Sanders, Communications Director 11. May 2010 23:22

As part of the American Homebrewers Association's annual "Big Brew" day, the Wootown Brewers brewed up a whopping 160 gallons of beer on May 8, 2010, behind The Thirsty Brewer, in Baldwin, Maryland. The club brew, a Red Ale, was brewed in quantities of 90 gallons, while another 70 gallons of beer and other fermentables were brewed by club members and attendees.

The day started at 7:30 with the water starting, and ended later in the afternoon. While the day was met with challenges due to the blustery weather, thankfully the only deaths were to numerous red cups, many more than typically meet the end of their life at a Wootown event (which is a lot).

Wootown would like to thank Tom Davidson and The Thirsty Brewer for hosting the event, and providing the burgers and hot dogs for club members. In addition to the club grub, club members brought dishes such as a taco dip, a spicy chili mac, and a number of other tasty dishes.

The next meeting of the Wootown brewers is currently slated for June 12. Look to this web site for details...

January 2010 Wootown Meeting RSVP

by Tom Davidson, President 20. January 2010 23:51

Woo and power to the peeps,

Once again, Jim and Bo have invited us to brew with them at DuClaw Brewing. The next meeting of The Wootown Brewers is this Saturday, January 23rd at 8 a.m. at the brewery in Abingdon. The address is
1305 Governor Ct., Abingdon, MD 21013 .

The club membership far exceeds the number of people that can be safely and sanely accommodated so we will be limited to two dozen attendees. There are always more members wanting to go and I have tried a couple of methods in the past to fairly decide who makes the cut and who does not. Last year I gave priority to people who had not been before. That approach pissed off some long time members who were unable to go.... and they were right because most of those new people are no longer around and very few of the remainder participate otherwise.

This year we will try "first come first served" but.... we have been taking attendance the last few meetings and I will weight the responses toward members who have been most active. Officers get 1st priority. My list is over 1/3 full already.... RSVP ASAP, please state whether you were at the October or November meetings and I will check that against the attendance recorded. If I have any info conflict I will get back to you immediately. I will announce the final list Thursday evening.

As in the past, this will be a potluck event. Please bring a side dish of some kind to share as well as any frosty beverages you'd like. The club will provide plenty of brats and\or other wurst as well as cups, paper plates, napkins, etc. There will be a charcoal grill going if you need it. I will bring CO2 with six hoses, you won't need to lug your own tank if you don't want to.

Last year we raffled off 4 batches of wort from that day's brew and Jim has indicated that we will do that again. Bring a CLEAN fermenter. Dues are due in January.... everyone paying their dues will receive a raffle ticket. Extra raffle tix will be available for a nominal charge. The Thirsty Brewer will also donate another prize or two... any suggestions?

Kevin has also organized a bus trip for February 13th, he may have shotgunned that out to everyone already but here it is cut and pasted:

Wootown Brewers
Semi-Irregular Brew Bus Trip
Saturday February 13, 2010

We are headed north to the City of Brotherly Love

We will be departing from The Thirsty Brewer on a deluxe 57 passenger motorcoach (equipped with a bathroom) at 10:00 a.m.

We will be stopping for lunch at Stewart’s Brewing Company in Bear Delaware. Lunch will be the choice of a  plated sandwich with sides and 4 samples of beer. Cash bar after the samples. Brewery tour included.

We will go to Philadelphia Brewing Company and Yards Brewing Company for tours and samples.

We will be returning to Thirsty Brewer at 8:30 P.M.

The cost of the trip is $45.00, lunch included. We need to fill 32 of the 57 seats at this rate. If we can get to 40 seats filled then we will refund everyone $5 reducing costs to $40 a head. Above 40 people is gravy for the club treasury, we will take 48 maximum leaving plenty of room for kegs and whoever needs a time out by themselves...

Also RSVP ASAP, we will open this up to the public on Saturday, Jan 30th. This is going to happen, I am not going to cancel this year no matter what. If the treasury eats it then so be it.

And last but certainly not least.... A mighty Woo and giant Conga Rats to Lisa and Jeff Sanders on the birth of their 1st child, Adelaide Rose Sanders, born January 12th.

Jeff might enjoy a decent cigar but Lisa would really like a wee dram of wine, she's been mighty thirsty for weeks.

Prost,
Tom
