May 2007 - Group "BIG BREW"
On Saturday, May 5, 2007, the Wootown Brewers met for their annual May "BIG BREW," behind The Thirsty Brewer in Baldwin, MD.
"Big Brew" is an event organized by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA), of which many of the club's members are also members. The AHA puts out several recipes each year, and homebrewers either brew the recipes as they are, or adapt them to suit their own needs. The key is to brew, and brew big (large batches) that encourage other brewers to gain more insight into the homebrewing process. This year, Wootown brewed 100 gallons of a Belgian Strong Golden Ale formulated by club President Tom Davidson. The recipe included some adaptations to include fermentable sugars more representational of Baltimore.
The brew began at 9 in the morning when members showed up to grind the bulk grain for the day's brew. Members brought dishes to share, including club member Greg's tasty pulled pork that garnered a number of positive compliments. President Davidson also graciously opened his taps to the club, and a number of members brought their beers for sharing and comment.
The "Big Brew" included the return of Wootown member Horst, making his triumphant return from Germany. Horst brought back with him some exquisite cigars, as well as an elixir called "Bier Schnaps," a schnaps liquor made from beer.
The "Big Brew" is the last group brew of the Wootown Brewers before the Summer break. The June meeting will be the final meeting before summertime.
Wootown would like to thank Tom Davidson (and his Monster Yeast) and the staff at The Thirsty Brewer, for their hospitality and generosity. Wootown would also like to thank Horst for the usage of his camera to take photos of the event.
